We all applaud when we hear that a woman has been given a great opportunity to head a major company. But hold the cheers. Dangers may lurk in high places.Female business leaders are more likely to be appointed to powerful positions when an organization is in crisis or in high-risk circumstances. In short, these women are perched on \”a glass cliff,\” set up for failure.

One of the biggest mistakes women make is not negotiating compensation whenever they have an opportunity to do so.  I remember years ago hearing Nell Merlino say that women leaving money on the table. Women Are Outearning Men; But There Is Still More To Work To Do.

8 Sep

This morning, I reading this article on Lemondrop and was surprised to hear that women are outearning men, but as I read the whole piece, it shows that it is only true for a young urban women.

According to a recent study, if you’re a single woman between the ages of 22 and 30, and live in a larger city, chances are you’re earning more than your male counterparts. About 8 percent more, specifically.

But don’t declare victory yet, ladies. As of the close of summer 2010, we still have quite a bit of work to get every woman’s pay equal to men’s.  Women are still lagging and the two things we all need to do next.

Sell Yourself. This is crucial for women to do. Be proud of your accomplishments and tell people about them.

Reject the First Offer. In other words, don’t leave money on the table.
